I'm killing LiveJournal syndication from my blog. LiveJournal makes rebuilding my blog a much more intensive operation (read: 2-3 times slower), it also isn't available for WordPress, the blogging system I may switch to. So if you wish to read my journal, it can be found at blog.bellmor.com. Good day

Dumbest CSS Conundrum Ever

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I spend about an hour and a half today trying to embed my gallery in the site's normal appearance, but ended up with an implementation that only had the tabs. Thanks to Adam dropping by, freaking out my roomie, and telling me about how he spent all day trying to do the same thing coincidentally with FreshmanCouncil.com's forum. It all boiled down to dumbest thing ever: <div style="clear:both" />. Which in non-nerd speak means "clean up." So feel free to visit The Gallery in matching B.com style.

Something Funny From Joe

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Joe sent me an email (with picture!) asking if I'd seen the Futurama episode with the "Hey TiVo! Suggest this!" tagline. :)

Rearranged Thursday

English 1101 is a very interesting class. We've got a lively discussion going about schools and corporations. The loudest voices were the extremists, of course. They didn't seem to understand the need for a compromise (in this case, regulations that would place limits on what private funding could do to impact the education system- such as preventing or pushing a school to stop teaching about globalization). What's funny is that it's the same discussion that was started on Friday, today was just a more heated version. I got my DVI to Video (SVideo and Composite) adapter today. It was delivered early this morning, but I didn't get the slip in my mailbox until after 3. I remembered that it was here about 30 minutes before the package pickup place closed. I ran to my 6:05 class after spending the first amount of money on my BuzzCard outside of laundry. $1.25 for Coke, what a rip. I'm gonna grab something from the Student Center Commons using some of the bonus card money I have after class tomorrow. Amazon is being really freaking slow about shipping out the Star Wars DVDs that I used my $50 gift certificate from my Palm purchase on. Now that I can connect my G5 to the TV, I can watch movies on it. Oh, really good news :) I was able to setup my 5.1 sound system in the dorm. Halo and TV sound great on it. I need to test out on of the Matrix movies on it. ;)

That Makes Me Chuckle

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

So I just flipped on Futurama, since my Tivo gets it whenever it comes on. At the beginning of every episode they have some kind of little phrase or quote. The one for this episode proclaims, "Hey, TiVo!Suggest this!" I think that how I ended up Season Passing Futurama, I found it in the recommendations.

Assault By Rain

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I've been soaked so many times today that I can't count anymore. Stupid hurricanes/tropical storms. Oh did I mention soon-to-be hurricane Gene Jeanne? Grrrrrr. I need some music recommendations, so recommend something to me. I read an article on CNN.com a week or so ago about stopping hurricanes. One idea was to nuke them, I think that may be something to explore ;)

Woodruff Dinning

No, it's not really better. West siders can get over themselves, the only thing they have over East is bigger rooms and better showers. And what the heck was that crappy ice cream? Brittain definitely has better ice cream.

Being Sick Sucks

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I started feeling sick Friday night with a small cough every once and awhile. Saturday, the coughs were much more frequent and strong headaches persisted. Advil helped, but didn't remedy the situation. My mom gave me some stuff and it's helped in conjunction with Advil. I was able to do my reading that I wasn't able to do Sunday night. In other news, this is going to be a busy week. Lots of work due :(

Ghost-town

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

So it's 9:00 PM here in Glenn Hall. I am now officially bored. I've already hung out with Scott, but got bored, since I didn't feel like any more Halo. I came back and channel surfed, but got bored of that. So I cleaned my room, reorganized some stuff for easier access, and vacuumed. There are about 8 people here on my floor. That's like 8 people out of 150. So upon getting really bored, I went for a walk around East Campus. I saw about 20 people walking around total. There were some frats lounging around, drinking. But nothing much really. So I'm back in the dorm, watching Stargate, with commercials :(. Everyone goes home on the weekends, which sucks, since several people I know are included in that group. To think, if I'd gone home, I'd have gone to see a movie with Mike, Jacob, Joe, etc and most importantly, gotten my mom to do my laundry. Oh yeah, my big, comfortable bed (I got a nice mattress pad for my dorm which is really nice).

Drunk People Make Me Laugh

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

My cousin is a pro spectator at Georgia Southern, watching all the drunks stumble. I ran into first drunk guy I've ever had a conversation with. He walks into the bathroom and just starts rambling on about crap, washes his hands and starts complaining about his roommates spilling pizza in his face, then he walks out. I turn to the guy next to me, laughing, and say "He's either wasted or high." He's like, "yeah" laughing about it. The dude walks back in and says, "I heard that. I don't do that stuff, I'm just wasted. Wiskey is good." Drunks make me laugh. I've yet to meet an angry drunk, luckily. But when they're that smashed, they're probably too out of it to do much. I apparently missed the spectacle of the drunks from the parties this weekend, along with all the other instaters that went home for the weekend.

I love my schedule. Two days a week I wake up late. On Fridays, I'm out at 12:30. So I guess I need to find something to occupy myself. I'm getting really bored of the food though. Hamburgers and Pasta every day isn't really cutting it. I think I've mentioned my schedule before, but it's just so.... awesome.

Day Two Of Tech

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

So it's really day three now, but I'm not that picky. I woke up at 9:30 (I hate alarm clocks!) to get ready for CoC Orientation. Get your mind out of the gutter- CoC stands for College of Computing. I grabbed a quick bite at Britain Hall and went over 75 to the Tech Hotel. The hotel was very upscale looking. Everyone considered stealing one of the many plasma screens they had everywhere. I met several Mac CS majors :). Overall, the CoC Orientation was a waste of time, just like FASET where you put alot of time into the thing and you end up doing very little that matters. 1 hour of good stuff and 5 hours that were very lackluster save the people I met. Afterwards I had dinner with Tom and we watched The Godfather in his dorm. Then I did some junk on the computer, took a shower, and now I'm going to bed.

I'm Now A College Student

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

We left for Tech at about 11:30, grabbed lunch on the way, and got there about one. I got my key and then we moved the cars, unloaded, and were moved in with help from the fraternities in about 30 minutes. Much easier than I thought it was going to be. The rain clouds apparently scared people off, which made moving in so much easier. The dorm feels bigger than I thought it was going to be. Pictures are available here. My roommate from New Jersey is normal. I got my computer, Tivo, printers, minifridge, speakers, etc. setup without any major problems. I actually like the way everything is setup more than I did at my old place of residence. Nate and Tom are two floors above me, as well as a kid I know from Connect with Tech. One of the biggest pluses is that my room is directly across from the bathroom. Having to use a key to get in and out sucks, since I don't have car keys to keep them with. I don't see why they can't use the BuzzCard. Oh yeah, anyone at Tech... I've got two batches of my mom's cookies that I'll never be able to finish if you're interested in a few.

Move In Day

My life has been packed in to a bunch of boxes. In about 12 hours I'll be at Tech. My mom is probably going to break down, cry, and embarrass me. We'll see.

I recently signed up for Cingular's $20 MEdia Works package, which includes unlimited data usage. However, it has been a nightmare setting it up with my PowerBook and V600 via bluetooth. It's taken about two weeks of collecting data and multiple failed attempts at getting a connection that doesn't drop with web or mail usage. These instructions are based one several assumptions: you have a working Mac running 10.3.4 with Bluetooth (May work with older versions, but I'm not going to go checking), you have a working Motorola V600 with Bluetooth turned on and in range of your Mac, and a working connection to the internet to download the modem scripts. So here's the steps involved in getting everything to work:
  1. Be sure to have paired your V600 with the computer, if you haven't go to the Bluetooth menu extra and select "Set up Bluetooth Device." A program will launch and walk you through pairing it. Do not select the option where you can setup the connection for the internet, it doesn't work
  2. Go to this site and download the "Scripts For Motorola GPRS phones" file
  3. Once you download and decompress that file, go into the decompressed folder and take all of the modem scripts and move them to /Library/Modem Scripts (note that this is the root level library, not the user level library)
  4. Go to System Preferences under the Apple Menu and select the Network button
  5. Go to Location and select "New Location." Give the location a name you'll recognize, like "Bluetooth"
  6. Go to "Show" and select "Network Port Configurations." Uncheck everything but Bluetooth and drag the Bluetooth port configuration so that it is at the top of the port configuration list
  7. Go to Show and select Bluetooth. Select the PPP tab
  8. Enter the following information into each field:
  9. Service Provider: Cingular (you can enter anything you like into this field)
  10. Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (The case matters!)
  11. Password: CINGULAR1 (The case matters and the save password field will auto check, which is fine)
  12. Telephone Number: wap.cingular
  13. Click the "PPP Options..." button and uncheck "Send PPP echo packets." Click OK
  14. Click on the "Bluetooth Modem" tab. Select "Motorola GPRS CID1" from the "Modem" drop down menu and uncheck "Wait for dial tone before dialing"
  15. Click on "Apply Now" at the bottom of the window
  16. Click "Show All" at the top of the window to return to all the preference buttons
  17. Click on the Bluetooth button
  18. Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on
  19. Check "Support Non-Conforming Phones" and quit out of System Preferences
  20. Go to your Applications folder and open Internet Connect
  21. Click the Connect button and watch it connect (or not if something doesn't work)
Using this setup, I was able to connect to Cingular's GPRS data network and maintain a stable connection until I got bored and disconnected after 45 minutes of browsing the internet and checking my mail. I've read several comments on Howard Forums where some areas don't support TCP header compression, which is where requests for sites will simply fail. You can disable this feature by going to System Preferences, clicking on the Network button, double click on the Bluetooth configuration, go to the PPP tab, click the "PPP Options..." button, uncheck "Use TCP header compression," click OK, and click "Apply Now." You should be good to go! If things work fine without disabling this feature, leave it on as the connection is faster. Hope this works for everyone.

I'm posting this from a Palm Tungsten T3 via bluetooth thru my Motorola V600 cell phone. Cool eh?

We've now got multiple, big, blue blow dryers spread out throughout our house since a stupid hose broke in our bathroom yesterday. These blow dryers sound like jets. The noise is somewhat acceptable with the door to my room closed. Still sucks. I get a consolation prize though! I get the G35 for work tomorrow :) Stupid cat just knocked over the trash can. She seemed to want out of my room, but she stops as soon as she hears the noise when I open the door. These fans also make it really hard to use the bathroom :(

Oh yeah, I heard from my room mate yesterday after the system finally started working! Seems cool enough. And I'm thinking a lot harder about dropping syndication to LJ since comments can't be synced back here. The designs at LJ are total crap too (unless you fork up cash to get the paid user stuff) and I won't pay for something that I've already got that works better.
